The most interesting part of school chemistry - laboratory chemistry - begins in grades 9-10. Unfortunately, by this time, many students already have time to become disillusioned with the subject, start it up and, as a result, cannot understand elementary concepts.

To get your child involved in chemistry and regain lost interest in it, here are some chemistry experiences that will be of interest to middle and high school students.

‼ ️ Warning: in some experiments, as a result of chemical reactions, the process of combustion of substances occurs. Be very careful! Observe safety precautions! Do not allow the child to experiment alone and prepare a fire extinguisher just in case.

We need:
- a tomato
- 3 ml syringe with a needle (30 rubles)
- sulfur from matches
- "Whiteness" or sodium hypochlorite (we buy in a hardware store - 30 rubles / bottle)
- 30% hydrogen peroxide or hydroperite solution (blisters of hydroperite are sold in a pharmacy, one blister - about 50 rubles). From 10 crushed tablets, filled with 50 ml of boiling water, you get the desired solution.

How to conduct the experiment:
- Dissolve sulfur in "Whiteness".
- We are waiting for the solution to exfoliate.
- We collect liquid in a syringe and chop off the selected vegetable.
- Then we introduce peroxide into the center of the vegetable.

Turn off the lights and voila: an ordinary vegetable has become a flashlight
‼ ️ Warning: The processed vegetable should not be eaten after the experiment.

This is a good example of the redox reaction - one of the main mechanisms of interaction between substances in chemistry.
In our case, "Whiteness" (aka hypochlorite solution) and peroxide are oxidizing agents, and sulfur is a reducing agent. After interaction, they seem to "change places", and salt is formed from sodium and sulfur, water and chlorine. Chlorine is a yellow-green gas that can glow. It is heavier than air and soluble in water, so the gas will remain in the tomato and you have nothing to fear.
